“Teaching English in Korea: Current Issues and Challenges”

Since its official introduction into Korean formal educational system in 1883, teaching of English has made both quantitative and qualitative changes. There were major changes in the 1990s that innovated and renovated the teaching of English in Korea. This lecture will review these changes and later developments in English education in Korea. The overall educational system including educational policies, curriculums, teaching methodology, testing, and teacher training will be discussed. Persistent problems and emerging issues in English education in Korea will also be discussed in the lecture.

權五良（コン・オリャン）先生略歴：
英語教育学博士（University of Texas at Austin）。中学校にて２年、大学にて３０年間教鞭を取る。英語教科書の作成や、第６次・第７次英語教育課程の策定にも携わる。
1995-6年には韓国TESOL学会（Korea TESOL）会長、2002-4年には韓国英語教育学会（KATE）会長、2000-7年には韓国英語評価学会（KELTA）会長を務める。また英語教育改善のための委員会、韓国大学修学能力試験委員会、英語教育イノベーション委員会など、韓国教育人的資源部の複数の諮問委員会のメンバーや、国際言語テスト学会（ILTA）学会誌Language TestingおよびAsian Englishesの編集委員も務める。
　現在、ソウル大学校師範大学英語教育学科主任、および外国語教育研究所所長。専門分野は英語教育政策およびテスト理論。近年は韓国英語能力テストの開発プロジェクトの責任者でもある。
