１９４３年イギリス・ノリッジ生まれ。博士（言語学）｡
エディンバラ大学大学院修了、レディング大学、エセックス大学を経て現在は、スイス・フライブルク大学教授。専門は社会言語学。
著書には The social differentiation of English in Norwich (CUP), Sociolinguistics: an introduction (Penguin Books) (土田滋訳「言語と社会」岩波文庫）、 Dialects in Contact (Blackwell), Sociolinguistic variation and change (Edinburgh University Press) 等がある。

World Engishes: Convergence or Divergence?

There are many intellectuals in Great Britain today who are worried about the future of the English language. It is very interesting, however, to note that these worries are of two different kinds. One concern is that English around the world is homogenising under the influence of American English. The other is that English is disintegrating into a number of mutually unintelligible varieties. These concerns can both be wrong, but they cannot both be right. This paper will attempt to resolve this issue.
